Ian has worked in education since graduating from Cambridge University. He has led MFL departments and run a sixth form. He was headteacher of a large 11-18 Church of England comprehensive in Kent, rated as outstanding by Ofsted in 2012.
Ian was President of ASCL 2013-14 and is currently CEO of Tenax Schools Trust which is a Teaching School Hub and trains teachers as a SCITT. He has worked closely with the DfE in a number of roles, including leading reform of Relationships and Sex Education, MFL Pedagogy and GCSE reviews, and the recent Initial Teacher Training Market Review. He has been Chair of Ofqual since 2021, and is interim Chair of Oak National Academy ALB. He has been closely involved in the reforms to teacher professional development including the ECF and the new NPQs. He is a trustee of Sabre Charitable trust, an early years educational charity working in Ghana. He was made a CBE in 2017 for services to education.
