Ian Bauckham CBE

Ian has worked in education since graduating from Cambridge University in modern languages. He has taught in comprehensive schools, led a modern languages department and worked as a head of sixth form. He has been the Headteacher of a large comprehensive school in Kent, which is Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ and a Teaching and National Support School. Ian now leads a MAT, as well as being an Ofsted inspector, an NFER trustee and a member of his regional HTB. Ian chaired a TSC-sponsored review of Modern Languages Pedagogy in 2016. As a NLE, he also supports many other schools. He was awarded the CBE in 2017 for services to education.

  • Exploring the key challenges and practical solutions in enhancing pupil engagement and interest in MFL learning through effective pedagogy
  • Evaluating the progress in delivering the recommendations of the Teaching School Council’s 2016 report, Review of Modern Foreign Language Pedagogy in KS3 & KS4 and assessing the next steps in enhancing MFL teaching
  • Designing planning around diverse resources and pedagogy which allows errors and pupil feedback to inform teaching provision
  • Ensuring MFL learners gain a comprehensive understanding of grammar, phonics and vocabulary through the broader learning of the culture and history associated with a language
  • Working in collaboration with feeder primary schools to effectively build on existing learning from Key Stage 2 and reinforce learning
